About Taqueria Downtown
From a Truck to Grove Street
Andrea and Phil started out selling tacos from a truck at the corner of Grove and Montgomery in Jersey City. In 2005 they moved into the brick corner building at 236 Grove Street, where Taqueria Downtown has a small dining room, a bar and a covered patio out front.
What to Order
Tacos come with onions, cilantro and salsa, filled with carnitas, steak, cecina, barbacoa, chorizo, fish or nopalitos. Tamales come rojo with pork, verde with chicken or rajas with jalapeño and cheese. The rest of the menu runs through flautas, tortas, enchiladas rojas and verdes, tostadas, burritos and plates of pork chops in green salsa or steak with onions.
Regulars point to the chilaquiles with cecina and a glass of hibiscus water, and the red pozole is the heartiest dish on the table. Chips and salsa come free when you eat in.
Many dishes are cooked with chicken stock, so ask before ordering if you are vegetarian.
Before You Go
The restaurant is open every day from 11 AM to 10:45 PM. There is often a wait for a table, sometimes a long one, and you can order drinks at the bar while you wait. Parking nearby is hard to find.
For catering, Taqueria Downtown Catering Co. works from 354 Grove Street, (201) 763-6902.
